12-year-old girl developed rare complication of COVID-19 leading to heart failure wilting which nevertheless managed to overcome thanks to the heart failure replacement machine and, after 45 days of admission at the Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona, he has already been discharged.

COVID-19 causes very few symptoms in children and adolescents and complications are rarebut the statistics did not accompany this 12-year-old Majorcan, who went through an ordeal with a happy ending.

The girl was admitted to the Son Espases hospital in Palma de Mallorca after being infected with the coronavirus. with rare SIM-Ped syndrome (Childhood Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome), a disorder that affects minors and can cause failure of various organs, including the heart.

So it was with a minor who was admitted to the intensive care unit of Son Espases for myocarditis – inflammation of the heart muscle – in serious condition, with fulminant heart failure without response to treatment. IN ECMO treatment was the only way out (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), a device that replaced your heart for six days. All this so that the heart and lungs can rest while the underlying disease caused by the coronavirus is healed.

The team from Vall d’Hebron traveled to Palma de Mallorca to immediately begin ECMO treatment and take them to a Barcelona hospital. AND The transfer is coordinated by the Balearic 061 Emergency Medical Service, supported by a military medical aircraft. and “complex,” as explained by the head of the pediatric intensive care unit in Vall d’Hebron, Dr. Joan Balcells, in the Efe statements.

The trip was to be with an ECMO-related minor and the added complications of having to ensure the security and isolation measures required by the pandemic.

After six days of ECMO treatment, the patient regained cardiac function, and after stopping mechanical ventilation after 17 days in the intensive care unit, she was able to go to the Vall d’Hebron ward. Then now I only had myopathy – pathology that affects muscle groups – as a consequence of his previous critical condition due to covid, but he restores his normal myocardial function.

“A period of such a serious illness is usually accompanied by a picture of muscle weakness, which must be eliminated; this led to five weeks of rehabilitation at the factory and, fortunately, he was able to return to Palma, where he will have to continue his rehabilitation, but we hope that in time there will be no continuation, ”explained Balcells.

So, “the good news is that even though the pandemic will continue to evolve, the children are doing very well, the impact is minimal, very few children are admitted to the intensive care unit, and everyone is recovering, even with photographs of this gravity.” “So This ability to recover is soothing, ”the doctor emphasized.

Girl suffered a previous pathology, hyperthyroidism caused by Graves-Basedow disease, which, according to Balcells, is not associated with coronavirus and is not considered a more serious risk factor for covid.

Since the start of the pandemic, 48 pediatric patients have been admitted to the Vall d’Hebron Hospital for the coronavirus, 14 of whom have been admitted to the intensive care unit and all have had good developmental indicators.
